This car started out life as a stock 69 VW Bug. It looks like it spent some time on the road before someone spent a lot of time and effort to change its nature. If you are looking for a stock 69 to run or restore, then this is probably not the car for you. On the other hand, if you are looking for something really fun and different then read on.
Exterior
As you can see from the photos this car has fiberglass replacement fenders, hood inserts, running boards, side flares and spoiler. The fenders are oversized to allow for larger tires and incorporate 1980 era Chevy lights. The thing on the back is called a whale tale and is supposed to hold down the back end when going really fast! (Maybe) and improve cooling air flow. The fiberglass parts will never rust but the steel parts will and have to some extent. Mostly in the early rust spots for this car (see patch panels for sale if you aren't familiar with this). The only bad spot is in the pan up front. Stupid mice made a nest! I have the patch panel for that spot, but you don’t want me to weld it in. Otherwise, it looks like someone used a very clean body for the base. The paint still looks good. I like to drive my cars so I didn’t try to fix the body, just the other stuff as you will see if you care to read on.
Interior
As you can see from the photos this car has a modified dash and a tilt steering collum from a 1980 era Chevy (again!). Everything works and the tunes crank! The seats are replacements and so are the door panels. The carpet is nice. Everything is looking great! It has a sunroof, but no heat and you don’t want to drive this in the winter anyway.
Drivetrain
As you can see from the photos this car has had its 1500cc engine replaced by a modified 1973/9 1600 cc engine. It’s bored and stroked to 90.5 x 80 and displaces 2058 cc. If you don’t know what that means, then this is probably not the best car for you.
It has dual Weber carbs, a hot cam and headers. Remote oil filter, electronic ignition and an electric fuel pump. It starts and runs really well and has very few miles since rebuild.
The 4-speed manual transmission shifts as it should, and the clutch is good.
The tires and the complete brake system have been replaced and function well.
The odometer reads 92,000 or so but it’s not reflective of the majority of the parts. The engine is not broken-in yet!
Undercarriage
The floor pans and rails are solid and original. The only problem is the hole in the front. I have the patch panel and someone with welding skills can replace the part.
Drive-Ability
This is one fast bug! It’s fun just watching all the reactions you get when driving this car, but the best part is when you kick it down! It’s got about four times the intake capacity, 40% more displacement and headers! Plus, all that fiberglass reduced weight. You could drag race this car at BIR if you wanted to and you would be the fastest bug on the track for sure! As for going down the road it is smooth and easy to control. All lights and accessories work.
A fun car restored to a nice quality and state as it presents now. I have a pile of receipts going back 7 years and pictures. Good interior and very nice engine bay. Blue / green paint with some bubbling rust on the hood and body as shown. This car was stripped down to the bare body and painted in the 90’s, I think. I purchased it in a box from an estate, so I don’t know much about its history other than with me. I used the car for driving so didn’t see any point in restoring the body, but it wouldn’t take much if that is what you are into. The body is very solid, and most areas are fiberglass or rust free. The aluminum wheels are in great shape and have a custom-made center cap.
In addition to assembling the car I have installed new carbs, jugs, pistons, heads, the entire fuel supply system and ignition system.
New steering wheel and tilt collum, gages and a Pioneer C D player.
New tires, brakes (complete) axel shafts, CV’s and wheel bearings.
This bug definitely provides maximum enjoyment in a mini package. SO, I guess good things do come in small packages?!
