Well, it's that time again. New month. New post.

Let's get crackin'. Two choices for us for grubbage this Monday the 1st of December. Gator's Dockside, or Smokey Bonez. The reason I state these two is they're the ones that people seem to like the most all around (save for Gerald and Noel at Smokey Bonez, but they HAVE shown up there in the past....). The downside to Gator's is that huge Bithlo montster trucker group meeting there every monday as well, so we may want to consider the Gator's on the West side of Hwy 50 (West Colonial). It's in the shopping center on the corner of 50 and Good Holmes (my house!!!! :D ). Smokey Bonez has proven to us that we CAN sit a group of 12 next to each other.

So let's vote :D

I think I've secured some 15" Acura Integra LS Mesh style wheels that are already pre-painted black for $150 for all 4 with some "decent" tires (fairly new).

FINALLY :D Not the later style 10 spoke ones I REALLY wanted, but I've been looking for these as well for a long time. Hopefully the paint's really good on them.

PAW467

Tony did you call your buddy at un-Fairbanks  about those new style wind blockers?

Neo Masamune

1st December 2003, 14:11

Hrmm...may not do these wheels after all....I'm going to have to research some more. Miata wheels are hub-Centric...Honda wheels are Lug-Centric, though they still have a hub guide, but it's smaller than the Miata's hub. May not do well, but I've seen miatas with Acura wheels. They must use a ring.

I think I'm just gonna save up for my Sub Zero's.

What's the concensus for tonight, are we having a no-show night? So far, the only true votes are myself and Patrick for the West Side Gator's Dockside. Tony's up for whatever, and Gerald's undecided.

Neo, another thing to look for with the wheels is the offset. Miata wheels have a 45mm offset, which is not a common spec in afermarket wheels. Switching to a heavier wheel with a drastically different offset can be murder on your bushings, and replacing bushings is not fun (nor cheap).

Anyone notice that we refer to everyone by their first name on this forum except Aaron? We always call him Neo. Just something I noticed...

Yes? No? Is there a meet tonight. Inquiring minds want to know.

Neo Masamune

1st December 2003, 19:32

Yea, there's a meet tonight. For those of you late-comers who want to join us, here are the directions:

From East side of Town (and North, and South). Make your way to the East-West Expressway and get on, heading WESTBOUND. You're going to continue on till you pass I-4, John Young and a Toll Booth.....then after some more driving you'll come upon Kirkman and Hiawassee....then another Toll Booth for .50 cents. After that booth is your exit Good Homes Take a right at the Exit, and go to 50. Make a left. To your right is a shopping center. Inside that shopping center is Gator's Dockside. Look for Patrick, Tony, and myself.

-Neo

AutoXRacer

Is it on HWY 50 and ...?

Thanks

I said Good Homes Road, dood. I shoulda said the shopping center is immediately to your right as soon as you turn left. Can't miss Gator's.

Neo Masamune

2nd December 2003, 11:56

No show from Gerald last night, just Patrick, Neil and myself. Oh well.

I think the discussion Dan and I had should be put into effect. We've got to keep it in one place like we used to, and we've got to keep it central. Smokey Bonez is the restaraunt most loved by everybody. We've discovered we can in fact have a group of 12 seat in a single row just fine (two 6 seater booths). The pricing is just about right, there's always some sports to watch, and ample and safe parking.

Anyone up for some drag racing at bithlo on Friday night 6:00 - 10:30 ? I'll be there at about 7 o-clock along with some rotaries and another miata. Our buddy Dan with the LS1-swapped RX-7 said he might go!!! He traps at about 128mph with a 100shot of n20!

Anyone interested?

hehehe.
I got $5 on it. ;)

I think a beat old NA would be a much better candidate for a 'full-on project car'. You could find one for next to nothing, and next to nothing split between a few people is even next-er to nothing! :D If it ever gets finished fixing up, somebody told me there is this thing called 'spec miata'... :D Who's got some empty garage space?!?

Bithlo... hmmm. intriguing. Never been there. I might be interested... to spectate. Would be cool to see some Miatas run. <reverse psychology> Especially since everyone knows how slow Miatas are. Even with, say, a centrifugal supercharger, water injection, exhaust, headers, whatever, they're slow. If a Miata were to have all of said upgrades, I doubt it could even pull a 14.5. Now, it's probably possible with a roots blower, and surely with a twin-screw, but everybody knows that centrifugal superchargers can't make good power. Well, I take that back. There could be one guy out there with some crazy centrifugal setup, with 'magical electronic chips' and such, that could pull off a fast ET and shut me, along with everyone else who knows I'm right, up, but I doubt it. Until that comes (friday, 6pm) we'll just have to live with knowing how slow our cars are. :( :( :( </reverse psychology>

Neo Masamune

2nd December 2003, 17:27

Tony's will probably pull a 13.5 with good practice, give or take .5 seconds.....but that's at Gainsville.

At Bithlo, it'll be a 14.5 give or take .5 seconds.

Who would like to get together for say like a X-Mas type party thingie.

Now, my place is way to small to host. So I was thinking along the lines of The Wundbar. This would be a RSVP deal and may cost a few dollars. The amount hasn't been tallied till I get showing of hands.

I need to know ASAP, so send me a PM and not a reply on the board. Ideal dates are 21-22 please let me know what dates will work.

Dream2Race

2nd December 2003, 18:53

Dan, Robert Palmblad ran a 12.9 recently with his Kenne Bell supercharger. IIRC, that's a centrifugal blower.

Tony's car would not run a 13.5. Not enough boost.

Maddog_fsu

2nd December 2003, 18:55

I'm not a big drag racing fan, but a lot of my friends are going to be there to race, and if i'm going to drive all the way from daytona to be there I'm going to have a little fun too!

FWIW Tony's car has quite a bit more power than I do, and I managed a 14.7 @ 94.2 mph there! It's not a great track but you can still have fun, just like I have fun at auto-x's i think are horrible. Anyways here is the whole slip:

R/T .628
60' 2.208
330 6.161
1/8 9.494
MPH 74.60
1000 12.342
1/4 14.744
MPH 94.20

And I backed it up with two 14.9's at close to 93mph... And that's with the stock header, stock cat, and stock exhaust!!! i do contribute a few ponies to the M2 head swap I just did, but other than the JRSC w/62.5mm pulley and '99 head the car is stock...

That is NOT a centrifugal blower though :ohno: He is using an autorotor still! He loves that torque monster for auto-x, and he sure surprises a lot of people in a straight line too!

-Neo Bithlo is bad, but its not that bad.

Stock SRT-4s have gotten 13.9s there, and I think the best time for a stock SRT-4 anywhere is 13.8. Just an example.

If front wheel drive cars on crappy street tires are pulling low 2 sec 60' times, it can't be all that bad.

I'll be out of town then.

Tony's car would not run a 13.5. Not enough boost. Agreed. I'll put a dollar on 14.2. :p

1/8 9.494
MPH 74.60
1000 12.342

Dan, Robert Palmblad ran a 12.9 recently with his Kenne Bell supercharger. IIRC, that's a centrifugal blower.
That is NOT a centrifugal blower though He is using an autorotor still! Ugh. Confusion abounds. I saw the thread when he ran the 12.9. I think I put a link to it in this thread. :D AFAIK, he's the fastest supercharged miata to date (first in the 12's). I hardly know the guy, but from what I've always heard/read, he's running a Kenne Bell supercharger, which is a twin screw (or just screw type, or lysholm, or whipple). Autorotors are also this type of supercharger, so maybe that is what he has.

BTW... was Palmblad's 12.9 at Bithlo?

Maddog_fsu

2nd December 2003, 19:58

I have personally seen Bob run 2 times in the 12's at bithlo... Yes the autorotor= twin screw, which is what i should have said so I wouldn't confuse anyone. I have seen consistant 13.9-14.3's out of stock srt4's out there, and these are often just kids with not a lot of experience.

FWIW the stock seq turbo'd RX-7 i'm talking about runs a consistant 1.8xx 60' time on his street tires. His best run that night was a 12.4

The LS1 powered RX-7 runs high 10's there with traps at about 128mph. Again street tires with about a 2.0 60' Gainesville is a much nicer track, but bithlo isn't that bad as previously noted. It's condition is mainly just used as an excuse for a slow run...

Tony Orlando

2nd December 2003, 21:37

Tony's car would not run a 13.5. Not enough boost. To quote Corky Bell :

While absolute boost pressure is important to power, it is not the sole measure. Bragging rights are not established by boost gauge readings; Quarter mile times and dynamometer readings are where the real story is. The power one can expect will depend completely on how well that boost is used. A low compression, 20 psi setup with no intercooling and lots of ignition retard will never come close to a well tuned 10 psi setup that uses all the right stuff. That being said, I'm not sure if 13.5 is realistic myself. I'd personally be happy with anything in the vicinity of 14, but having never run the 1/4, it will take many attempts, (or an experienced driver) to find out what my car is truly capable of.

Might be fun though......... :)

Oh, BTW... I think I found out what Mark is planning on doing to his car. Boo yah!! (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=6324&item=2446213616) :p

I will admit, my slighly modified Celica GT-S, which pushes 160 WHP (mine est about 167-ish) managed to run a 14.6X at Bithlo, trapping at in the low 96 mph range. With enough visits, one can learn to launch right even at Bithlo, I suppose. RT's, which I'm quite proud of, were always in the extreme low .5's, with .5 being perfect.

Please note, when I said I would expect Tony to run around 13.5 + or - .5, his car pushes roughly the same power as an S2000, and is MUCH lighter. S2000's can pull 13.6's-13.9's all day at Bithlo. Tony's power delivery is much like an S2000, actually....so Tony, with practice, a 13.5 isn't out of reach.

-Neo

Of course, my statements above are in consideration that there's an experienced driver at the helm. Tony, it'll take some practice for sure.

If we do this friday evening, probably a better chance for people to join up.

Tony, for a tranny brace, were you talking about this (http://www.rspeed.net/miata/item.asp?dept=3&cat=14&prod=301-027) or this (http://www.miatamania.com/Shop/ViewProducts.aspx?PlateIndexID=38927)? From searching a bit, the second one seems to be of questionable usefulness. Anyway, something like this is quickly rising up my list of to-do mods. That or a 5 speed swap. Do any of you 5-speeders have trouble with the 1-2 shift under hard acceleration? Seems that the 6 speed is especially finickey about going into gear. Something to do with the engine and tranny torquing under hard load. Thinking the above braces may help things. I miss 2nd TOO often. Only happens when shifting near redline too!  I think the 6 speed design just sucks, at least for 2nd gear. When cold, every other gear is fine, but 2nd crunches bad every time. It's bad when you notice you've developed a habbit of shifting into 2nd with a delicate/different technique than any other gear, to avoid crunching. Could I have some problem developing down there, or is that just the way it is? Either way-->

Neo Masamune

5th December 2003, 09:57

Dan, I used to crunch into gear from the 1-2 shift untill I told myself to stop pulling the shifter towards me, and to the rear of the car right down the center instead, so that took care of that. For such a short shifter, however, the 2-3 shift is a long and wide throw, and I often miss it under hard acceleration, often bouncing off the splitter between the 1st gear and 3rd gear gate.

To comment on the 6 speed Celica GT-S issue mentioned before....I managed to learn how to shift properly in it, and it took alot of concentration to get it right, to keep it in the VVTL-i range after 6200 rpms. Probably how I could eek a 14.6X run out of it. Edgardo has me beat in his old one though (Red S2000 owner now) with a 14.5X run. These were done on an awesome night with temps around 65 degrees.

Dan, what kind of tranny oil are you using?
When I first bought my car, I was told the Miata tranny was one of the smoothest on the road; NOT!!!

I then flushed and refilled my tranny with Redline MTL and it became smooth as butter!!! No more gear crunching either...

I've read in many magazines that the 6 spd tranny is crap. :(
That the 5 spd is much better... And I wanted to do a 6 spd swap... Oh, well...

Oh, and its vitally important to press the clutch in fully, all the way to the floor...
I sometimes get too excited shifting between 1st and 2nd, I only press the clutch 3/4 of the way; then crunch...

I noticed the factory clutch engagement sucks too, I wish it were higher sometimes...

You should only have to depress the clutch just a little. On my 95 M and on Number 2 (before slave cyliner leak) I could push the clutch in about 1/4 distance to shift.

The first day I have a chance to take out my miata in over a week … A monstrous F350 decided to make a U turn in front of me and his tire tagged my left door, qtr panel and wheel:mad: . I basically bounced off his tire; the only “damage” to his truck was a bunch of my red taint on his rubber. FHP said we had conflicting stories (I didn’t get the other drivers side story) and did not issue any tickets, was not my fault IMO. I called and made a claim with his insurance company. I am cursed. The last three cars I have bought (including the Miata), with in the first two months I have had an accident in them, no other accidents or tickets. I was actually on my way to sears to pick up a second set of jack stands, my intention was to bleed the brakes and clutch this weekend ... I may be too bummed to bother with that now. Thanks for listening guys. Maybe I’ll see you Monday night, if I am not too embarrassed to take the Miata out of the garage.

We've all been there; I got my passenger door crushed by someone backing right into it in a parking lot. Kabel,

Supercharged for me; reasion being is I have a Automatic. I didn't want to monkey around with a turbo system and have issues with major turbo lag that comes as a side effect of the automatic.

As far as supercharged, the Automatic can stay underboost quite abit longer and not suffer lag issues associated with turbo's. I really had my heart set on a BR M62 but I'm not crazy about being a gunnie pig. Theres someone that just got a VF kit put on their automatic miata and I'm waiting for more info on there set up.

Thats my reasioning for it.

Kabel,

Less money, no turbo lag, easier to diagnose problems, no extra injectors, kept my stock ECU, no re-wiring the car, no adding MAP sensors and no intercooling.

And a well designed SC kit can hang with a turbo any day of the week. I don't see the appeal of 'em. In Florida, anyway.

Turbo appeal: I'm not partial to either, but it's only in the last year or two that so many good SC options have appeared. Before that, "supercharged Miata" meant Jackson and 150 rwhp. :( When FM2s were making > 230 rwhp, it really wasn't much of a choice.

The only reason SCs don't require all the gizmos for fueling is because they run less boost. Above a certain amount of boost (and fuel flow requirement) no software trickery (chip/powercard/etc.) is going to be sufficient. Same idea for intercooling. More boot means more heat created making it, and more need for an intercooler, water injection, etc. Same for cost. More boost (power), more money.

This all gets me thinking... I wonder if there is anything stopping you from using the powercard with a turbo. It would sure make a cheap setup. Actually, I guess that is how most turbo kits work, with fueling 'band aids'. I'm surprised there isn't a cheap, non-intercooled, turbo kit that uses such a device. With a small, quick spooling turbo, this would surely make the low-to-mid range SC buyer's decision a bit more difficult. Bring back the FM1? :D

Actually, boost doesn't equal heat.

When comparing a SC and turbo running equal amounts of boost, the turbo's intake charge air will be remarkably hotter. Why? The source of the air. A turbo is recycling hot exhaust gas into your engine, whereas a SC is drawing ambient, (or at worst, underhood) temperature air. You can even delve deeper into the thermal efficiency of the different SC types to further reduce intake temps. A centrifugal, (to pick one at random... :D ) is a much more thermally effiecient design than the roots or lysholm. Its method of compressing more air into the same space as opposed to blowing more air in the same amount of time creates less heat. I would "guess-timate" that a Centrifugal SC generating 10psi would heat the intake air as much as a turbo creating 5psi. That is why you almost never see a non-intercooled turbo kit. Putting exhaust back into the engine without cooling it is a recipe for disaster.

As far as the Powercard, it is basically a non-tuneable piggyback and is not "application specific". You can use it on anything up to about 8psi. It just reads A/F and timing, and adjusts when it sees a need. In theory, you could run my kit with it.

They do make the Greddy kits for NA's, (small, non-intercooled turbo.) The reason for no NB Greddy kit is the returnless fuel system in our cars. (Greddys use a rising rate Fuel pressure regulator in your return line to raise fuel pressure under boost.)

In theory; you could buy a Greddy kit for a late model NA (so the manifold would fit), plug in the powercard, and get a big-azz midpipe to reduce spoolup time, and you'd have your cheap NB turbo. In theory .

I should post this to the Power Mods forum so MarkP can tell me what an idiot I am. ;)

Racer46

9th December 2003, 22:52

Pressure = heat! That is how a diesel works. Increase the pressure and the temperature rises. When the temp. gets high enough the fuel lights off.

If you were able to take a reading on the output side of your supercharger you would find that the increase in temp. would be a couple of hundred degrees over ambient. This increase does not come from the mechanical friction of the compressor but from the compression of the air itself.

Turbos do not recycle hot gases back into the engine. The impellers are in separate housings. The proximity to each other is very close so I'm sure that there is heat transfer from the exhaust to the intake impeller.

I never took thermodynamics in college so all you engineers feel free to have at me. I've got my NOMEX on.

10AE 2344

9th December 2003, 23:22

I'll tell you what an idiot you are! That's what friends are for! :p

I hate to pull the physics card, but more boost does equal more heat. From basic thermodynamics (ideal gas law), P*V=n*R*T. Where P= pressure, V= volume, and T= temperature. Pressure and temp. have a direct 1:1 relationship. Increase one with everything else constant, the other increases. Now, this is IDEAL gas law. Compression is far from ideal in a SC/turbo, so the ratio is worse than 1:1, which means more heat for a given pressure increase. How far from ideal (or thermally efficent) the compression is, dictates how much more heat, than that required by the ideal gas law, will be added.

I have to disagree with you on the effiencies of SCs. Centrifugal is better than roots, but lysholm is better still. Google it!

I agree that turbos are meant to run very hot, so that is another source of heat not present with a supercharger. However, turbos don't recycle exhaust gas into the engine! That'd be like a HUGE EGR valve! :p Exhaust gas dosen't have enough oxygen left in it to burn again. (ideally NO oxygen if running at 14.7 A/F ratio) A turbo setup is almost like on a centrifugal SC, except they use the exhaust gases (instead of a belt) to spin the blower, which compresses air from a normal intake. Sorry, but a turbo at 5psi and a SC at 10 aren't even close to the same heat production.

check this out. http://auto.howstuffworks.com/turbo.htm

Enought of this! I got to go study for my exam! See what you get me into!

edit... ha! just saw your post pete. you're 100% right, so no flaming. :D I'd guess his intake temps are pushing about 200deg. A bit less with the water injection on.

Argh. I need to proofread my long posts. I didn't mean the actual hot exhaust, just the heating of the air by the turbo housing sitting on a hot header. It was late.

I agree that a SC causes heat as well, but I still feel that the general consensus is that a SC is more thermally efficient.

We better keep this conversation for in person on Monday, otherwise the mods will shut this down or tell us to take it over to power mods. :D

looking forward to Monday, though. ;)

Have you guys been to Buffalo Wild Wings in Oviedo (across the street from Target – by Petsmart)? I know one of the owners and may be able to arrange something. Though it is essentially a sports bar and may be crowded with Monday night football fans.

I am totally cool with SB in Waterford since it is mere minuets from my house :) !

We'd love to make it some major wing place, the but problem is that we need to keep it somewhere central in the city. The Fashion Square mall area is pretty much DEAD center in Orlando, and the place we get most people to show up to.

Any takers for tomorrow night's trip to Rockeys?

I'm looking for something to do tonight, actually. Mandy's out of town, and I'm bored. Call me if anybody's game. You all have the #.

And BTW, that's an 01-up model STB in that picture. I have no idea how they made it fit, though.... There's literally NO room there, even my modified RB STB bracket wouldn't work.

In theory; you could buy a Greddy kit for a late model NA (so the manifold would fit), plug in the powercard, and get a big-azz midpipe to reduce spoolup time, and you'd have your cheap NB turbo. In theory .

I should post this to the Power Mods forum so MarkP can tell me what an idiot I am. ;) GReddy does NOT make a kit that fits any 1.8L NA!!! If they did I would have one right now! The manifolds are different between the 1.6 and 1.8 blocks.

So buy a manifold from FM. Or have one fabbed. A small roadblock to building the setup, if you ask me. Once the manifold is in place, the powercard takes care of fuel in place of a RRFPR, and you're good to go. I'm suprised that no one has done this yet....

Bumped into Mark at Rockey's yesterday, I think we decided to give the Waterford Lakes Gator's Dockside another go again. Hell, if it's packed, we've always got Smokey Bonez right down the street.

Everybody game?

I haven't finalized a date yet, but it will be sometime in january.

Whew! Day 1 of Project 626... What a day! Did a lot of prepping... The object came in today, very high quality! Did a test graft and I must say wow! Fortunately/Unfortunately, tomorrow I start the money earner; so Day 2 of Project 626 will be Christmas Day, hopefully will be final as well, the permanent grafting will take place. I can't wait!! :D
