Patrick Winn Nielson passed away on Saturday, July 20, 2024, at LDS Hospital due to complications from his ten-and-a-half-year battle with non-smoking lung cancer. He was surrounded by loved ones and his final moments in mortality were filled with the deep love he shared with his family and friends.

Pat was born October 24, 1968, in Salt Lake City, Utah, to Max and Christine Nielson. He grew up in a large and loving family with five brothers and one sister in Bountiful, Utah. If you ask Pat’s family what best describes him, you will hear many common themes: loyalty, integrity, strength, dedication, faithfulness, devotion to family, positivity, optimism, determination, generosity, and wisdom. Many of Pat’s accomplishments have become family lore: benching 350 pounds, pinning his wrestling opponents in record time, recruiting his brothers into boxing matches complete with video playback and coaching from Pat and his Bountiful High football teammates, removing stumps by himself with only a metal stick or winning ‘favorite uncle’ award for his generosity to his nieces and nephews.

After graduating from high school, Pat served an LDS mission in Scotland where he learned some of life’s greatest lessons on perseverance and turning to the Savior. After his mission, Pat graduated from the University of Utah with a Bachelor of Science degree in Finance and started his lifelong career at Zions National Bank. Pat was excellent with finances, but his coworkers knew him best for his enduring friendship. Outside of work, Pat was adventurous. He loved playing sports, working out, backpacking, hiking, skiing, riding dirt bikes and ATVs.

Pat’s ultimate adventure began when he met Jennifer Lambert on a blind date. Shortly after Pat and Jen started dating, Pat’s family went on a cruise. At every port Pat quickly left the ship to find a payphone to call Jen. He was truly smitten, and they were later married in the Salt Lake Temple on June 21, 2005. Pat waited a long time to meet his true love, and this wonderful union established the family he had hoped for all of his life. Being a dad to Joshua, Morgan, and Jaxon was the joy of Pat’s life. Pat was so proud of his family. As a new father, Pat was convinced Josh was the smartest child that had ever lived and throughout his life Pat continued to tell anyone who would listen about his son’s many accomplishments. Pat and Morgan could communicate without saying a single word, and Morgan’s athletic prowess was a never-ending source of pride. Jaxon was a miracle child, and Pat did everything he could to extend his time on earth to be with his little boy. With the support of his family and an incredible medical team, Pat extended his twelve-month prognosis to ten additional years of life. In that time Jen orchestrated a lifetime of experiences through travel, time at the cabin, summers on the lake, epic trips to Disneyland, holiday costumes and decorations, countless birthday parties, get togethers and celebrations.

Pat truly lived a blessed life and he blessed the lives of those around him. Pat never complained, he never took time off, and he faced life with resolve and optimism. No one knew how heavy his burdens were or how much pain or discomfort he was in. Pat’s quiet demeanor and shy smile always gave way to hours of conversation and pearls of wisdom. Pat was loyal, he served others first, and he always sacrificed for those he loved.

Pat is survived by his wife, Jen; his three children: Josh, Morgan and Jaxon; his parents, Max and Christine; and siblings: Curt (Lisa), Darren (Bessy), Shaun (Marci), Angela (David), Mike (Shandee), Matt (Brook); and 27 nieces and nephews; his in-laws, Rod and Karen Lambert; Jon, Erin (Danny), Taylor, Tyson (Sydney) and 5 nieces and nephews.
